Aim and Scope of Journal

Aim

Future Education is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to advancing understanding of the future development of education systems, institutions, and pedagogies in a rapidly changing world. Our mission is to bridge the gap between forward-thinking theory and practical implementation, fostering a vital dialogue between Eastern and Western perspectives on educational transformation. The journal aims to provide a global platform for scholarly research and critical dialogue on how education itself is being reimagined in response to technological transformation, new relationships between education and industry, societal challenges, and new models of knowledge production and learning.

The journal is particularly interested in the transformation of education from a bounded institutional model to an open, interconnected educational ecosystem, in which universities, schools, industry, and society collaborate in new ways to support lifelong learning, innovation, and human development.

Scope

The journal publishes interdisciplinary research on the future of education across all levels, including primary, secondary, tertiary, vocational, professional, and lifelong learning. The journal particularly welcomes research that bridges traditional boundaries between sectors, disciplines, and national education systems.

The scope of the journal is organised around four interconnected thematic areas:

1. Educational Ecosystems and Institutional Transformation
Research in this area examines the changing role of educational institutions within wider social, technological, and economic ecosystems. Topics may include ecosystem universities, industry–education integration, new institutional models, governance innovation, and the role of universities in regional and global innovation systems.

2. Human Learning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
This area explores how artificial intelligence and digital technologies are reshaping learning, teaching, assessment, and human capability development. The journal is particularly interested in research that examines the relationship between technological change and human learning, rather than technology alone.

3. Transnational Education and Global Dialogue
This area focuses on cross-border education, internationalisation, and the development of global education partnerships and systems. The journal particularly encourages dialogue between different educational traditions and systems, including comparative studies and transnational education models.

4. Implementing Educational Innovation
This area focuses on the practical implementation of educational change, including curriculum innovation, new pedagogical models, assessment reform, institutional transformation, and educational policy implementation. The journal is especially interested in research that connects theory with practice and examines how educational innovation is implemented in real institutional contexts.

The journal invites various submission types, including original research articles, reviews, hypothesis and theory articles, position papers, and shorter articles focused on practice, policy, perspectives, and conceptual analysis. Each issue will feature a mix of these formats to ensure a dynamic and comprehensive discussion that is relevant to both academic and professional audiences.

The journal is owned by OAE Publishing Inc, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

Gold Open Access. All articles published by Future Education are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately from the date of publication. For further information, please refer to Open Access.

Articles in Future Education are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). The CC BY 4.0 allows for maximum dissemination and re-use of open access materials and is preferred by many research funding bodies. Under this license users are free to share (copy, distribute and transmit) and remix (adapt) the contribution for any purposes, even commercially, provided that the users appropriately acknowledge the original authors and the source.

Copyright is retained by authors. Authors are required to sign a License to Publish (which can be downloaded from the journal's Author Instructions), granting Future Education, which identifies itself as the original publisher, exclusive rights to publish their articles, and granting any third party the right to use the articles freely as long as the integrity is maintained and the original authors, citation details and publisher are identified.

The Editors of this journal enforce a rigorous peer-review process together with strict ethical policies and standards to guarantee to add high quality scientific works to the field of scholarly publication. Unfortunately, cases of plagiarism, data falsification, image manipulation, inappropriate authorship credit, and the like, do arise. The Editors of Future Education take such publishing ethics issues very seriously and are trained to proceed in such cases with a zero tolerance policy. To verify the originality of content submitted to our journals, we use CrossCheck (powered by iThenticate) to check submissions against previous publications.
